"What you put down is what you pick up." - Clyde McDade - Health Impact Coach
Introduction:
Defining and chasing your purpose in life are worthwhile goals. Fulfilling your purpose is even greater. But if you’re not healthy you decrease living it out.
Today, I’m going to share why as a workplace leader you need to remember your health and purpose are tied together. Productivity doesn’t come from anywhere. It’s a product of your will, planning and being your healthiest self.
With Learn how to be as productive with your health as your work life in today's post. What you learn can help you reach your purpose!
As a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist I get to see high performers like you do their thing. Often, when a workplace leader comes to me for conquering stress or muscular injuries the story is the same. Their work life caused them to hit a bump along the road to their purpose.
They end up working with me because at some point they ignored their health. And that’s a gazillion-dollar gamble you don’t want to take. So, how do you keep up your health as much as chasing your purpose at work?
Telling a CEO or other workplace leader to slow down is like asking a Formula One racer to do the same. They won’t! The next best thing is to be mindful. Mindfulness means being aware of what you, your mind and body are doing at all times. When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed at work, stop and take a look at what’s causing this. Workload, coworkers, time or all of the above? Once you’re aware of your stressors you can do something about them.
This is more than delegating tasks. Oftentimes, what you delegate ends up in your work pile again. Let go by never allowing that stressor to come back. An example is giving back tasks to coworkers you supervise. Sure, you can help out but there needs to be a limit or “overhelp syndrome” will strike again!
Why do you do the work you do? Is it fulfilling your purpose? I used to massage full time. That changed in 2023 when I decided to massage one day a week. I did this to chase my purpose which is filmmaking. How about you? Is your job the purpose you wanted or is there somewhere else or something else you need to do? Start the process of heading in that direction.
Find ways to be active at work. A mistake workplace leaders make is trying to find time to workout before or after work. Instead, try instituting a workplace workout routine! These are easy, fun and don’t require gym clothes. Also, you won’t work up a sweat. An easy start is to take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. This burns calories and gets you into the habit of working your muscles. Afterall, working muscles help burn fat.
Stash a pair of three to five-pound weights in your workstation. When you get to work set a timer for one to three minutes doing light weightlifting. Do this at least three times a week and you will start to build healthy muscle on the job! If you feel pain lifting weights or any exercise, stop and consult your doctor.
The right salad contains vegetables, fruits, meats and other healthy ingredients your body needs. Substitute fattening dressings with lemon juice and healthier alternatives. Eating a good salad for breakfast gives you vitamins, minerals and energy you need to jumpstart your day! If that doesn’t entice you try two or three hard boiled eggs in the morning. But if you're diabetic check with your doctor to learn what the best breakfast and overall diet are for you.
Do you need to lose a few extra pounds? Choose activities that are fun for you, burn fat and calories. These include dancing, swimming, walking up hills, and so on. The point is to choose something you love being active with. If you have a passion for the martial arts or riding horses these can go a long way in helping you lose the weight you want. There’s no rule saying weight loss has to be boring and torturous. Get out and have some fun!
